Tyrone vindicated on wetlands matter

During the staff comment portion of the Tyrone Town Council meeting last Thursday night, town manager Barry Amos told the council about the results of an investigation into whether or not the construction of Handley Fields destroyed wetlands.

Amos said that at a previous meeting local environmental activist Dennis Chase accused the town of destroying wetlands by building the Handley Park fields. The town paid for consultants and the Army Corps of Engineers to study the area and to see if any wrongdoing occurred.

"The results found that the town had done no wrong and that if there were any wetlands destroyed it was a minimal amount that would not have been covered by a Wetlands Protection Program," said Amos.

The council recommended going back to the county and getting the $25,000 that was being withheld from helping with the construction of the fields.

"It is obvious they won't shut up," said Councilman Ronnie Cannon. "So we'll have them put up. It is now Tyrone 4, County 0."

Council member Paul LeTourneau concurred and said that Tyrone has been vindicated. "We can tell Dennis Chase that the sky isn't falling," said LeTourneau, who believes the county should support Tyrone Recreation.
