School board tentatively approves budget for 2003 By MICHAEL

The Fayette County Board of Education tentatively approved a $141 million budget for the 2003 fiscal year at a called session Tuesday. The budget is a $5 million increase from last year, which comes mostly in the form of personnel. The budget is balanced and is only a 4-percent increase over last year's budget. Comptroller Jim Stephens told the board that no programs would have to be cut, which is a striking difference from most school systems seeking a balanced budget. There are some things and some hires that the school system will not be able to do this year, though none were mentioned specifically, but the student-teacher ratio will be maintained and the programs that were in place last year will remain as well. The board members were very pleased with the budget and the efforts that went into balancing it. The budget will be advertised in the county's legal organ and should be approved at the next regularly scheduled board meeting June 17.
