WASA, Fayette County team up to treat local septage By JOHN
MUNFORD
Fayette County's septage the liquid and solid remnants pumped out of septic tanks will eventually be treated by the Peachtree City Water and Sewer Authority. WASA has agreed to operate a septage treatment plant to accept septage pumped from local homes. Fayette County will pay for construction of the treatment facility, estimated at $150,000, and WASA will charge a per load fee to cover its costs of operating the plant, said WASA General Manager Larry Turner. WASA has also agreed to charge an additional $25 per load surcharge that will be given back to Fayette County to offset the cost of the septage treatment facility, Turner said. The septage treatment operation will begin once the expansion of the Rockaway sewer treatment plant is complete, Turner said. Currently, Fayette's septage is treated in Clayton County, but officials there have told Fayette representatives they want to phase out that agreement. Regulations require each county in Georgia to arrange for disposal and treatment of its septage. This is not the first time the county and WASA have cooperated. In fact, the county bills WASA customers through its billing process for water customers, which saves WASA on both cost and manpower, Turner has said. Typically, the county sends WASA a monthly check representing the sewer bills it has collected from Peachtree City residents.
