Local libraries offer entertaining programs for children By MICHAEL
BOYLAN It is official. There will not be a new Harry Potter book released this summer but there are countless books out there for readers both young and old to enjoy. You could find many of these books at local bookstores but the real deal is at your local library. In fact, the Fayette County libraries will offer a vacation reading program filled with entertainment, reading clubs, special programs and more. The vacation reading program gets underway today with a performance from D'Avante, a magician. He will perform acts of prestidigitation at the Tyrone Library at 10:30 a.m. There will be entertainers galore every Wednesday following D'Avante, including ventriloquist Cliff Patton on June 12, A Company of Friends' production of "The Little Mermaid" on June 19, Magician Ken Scott's "Around the World with Reading" on June 26, Flying Debris with juggler Todd Key on July 10, storyteller Curtis Richardson on July 17, World Wide Crafts on July 24 and a play from Fayette Players and Community Theatre at the end of the month. The Tyrone Library will offer Character First programs throughout the summer. The program involves a group of young people demonstrating positive character traits through songs, motions, dram and storytelling. They meet Tuesdays at 1 p.m. and tackle a different character trait each week. Each week's trait is represented by a different animal. For instance, the topic on June 25 is determination and the animal is the King Salmon. The Tyrone Library will also offer Science Club for children in grades six and older and a stamp camp for older elementary school students and up. The Fayette County Public Library will have a very similar schedule as Tyrone. Their Character First programs will take place at 10 a.m. on Tuesday while their entertainment programs will take place at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. They will have Thursday programs as well at 2 p.m. featuring storytellers, science programs, nature demonstrations (meaning reptiles and the like) and more. The Peachtree City Library will have entertainment on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 and 10:45 a.m. Those wishing to attend performances must get tickets at the library Thursday through Monday before the show. Many of the entertainers appearing at the Peachtree City Library will be the same as Tyrone's but several will be different. Those interested can pick up a full schedule at the library. Though the libraries are set to entertain children, their main goal is to get them into the library and reading. The reading program, featured at all three libraries, has children reading in 15 minute increments. Once a child reaches 10 hours they receive a certificate as well as some prizes as they continue advancing. Each child receives a booklet to fill out as they try to read as much as they can. The library is a wonderful place that can open up entire worlds to readers of all ages. Drop by your local library this summer and find out what is going on.
