Teacher assistant takes county honors

Kimberly Price, a teacher assistant at Woodland Charter Elementary School, has been selected as 2002-2003 Fulton County School/Support Professional of the Year.

Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Michael Gray and Woodland Principal Noris Price surprised Price with the announcement during a faculty meeting May 21. She was shocked and speechless upon hearing the news.

"I appreciate this so much," she said. "Constant encouragement from all of the Woodland staff got me to where I am today."

Price was chosen as the district winner from among four other Fulton County finalists Teri Stewart from Evoline C. West Elementary School, Penny Peppers from Campbell Elementary School, Jane Milam from Findley Oaks Elementary School and Kathy Davis from Milton High School.

She will be formally honored at the Fulton County School System's Employee of the Year Celebration December 6, which recognizes each Teacher of the Year and School/Support Professional of the Year from each school and central administrative building, and a Business Partner of the Year.

As a teacher assistant, Mrs. Price provides support to teachers and students, supervises the school's Opportunity Room, and serves on several school committees, including Woodland's Governance Board.

She is a coordinator of the school's mentoring program, which identifies students needing mentors and then matches them with business and community volunteers.

Price, who originally began her career with Fulton County Schools as a lunchroom worker at Banneker High School, decided to pursue her teaching degree after serving seven years as a teacher assistant at Woodland. She graduated from Brenau University with honors earlier this month with a B.S. degree in Early Childhood Education, and earned placement on the Merit List seven times.

She also received a $15,000 Georgia Power Minority Mentoring scholarship to pursue her education, and has been Custodian of the Year at Esther Jackson Elementary School and Assistant of the Year at Woodland Elementary School.

Those who work with Mrs. Price also note her enthusiastic and "can-do" attitude in all that she does.

"Mrs. Price always takes on projects or is willing to assist with anything that will help the school accomplish its goals," said Woodland Principal Noris Price in her letter of recommendation to the School/Support Professional of the Year selection committee.

"She is a team player and is focused on doing whatever it takes to get a job done."
