City wants its past due taxes paid

Union City is getting ready to get tough on delinquent taxpayers.

The City Council voted to contract with Government Tax Solutions, Inc. for the collection of delinquent property tax at the May 21 meeting.

GTS will be responsible for sending late notices, the processing of liens and, if necessary, the support of tax sale of properties at no cost to the city.

Delinquent taxpayers will pay a fee directly to the company, the city will receive all collections.The fee for services from GTS is tacked on to the tax bill which is paid to the city as an administrative cost.

According to City Administrator Sonya Carter, the city will realize a savings in manpower hours.

In other news, the City Council:

Selected the Woodwind Construction Company with a bid of a little over $7,000 for the City's 2002 Community Development Block Grant project involving curb guttering and similar work for Goodson Street.

Extended the contract with BRI for waste removal to October, 2004 and $7,500 was allocated to purchase computer software from Creative Logic Technologies, Inc.

The software purchase will be funded from the Water/Sewer Enterprise Reserve Account and will be used to take an accounting of related assets as required by state law.

Decreased the speed limit on Highpoint Road from Littleton Drive to Dodson Road from 45 m.p.h. to 30 m.p.h., and a school zone, 25 miles per hour, will be established from Deep Creek Bridge to Dodson Road for the new school.

A three-way stop for traffic control will be installed at the intersection of Highpoint and Dodson Road.

Voted to remain a partner with Fulton County as a sub-recipient of the Community Development Block Grant to ensure they would continue to receive funds. The city had the option of applying for its own CDBG this year as Fulton County has exceeded the 200,000 population mark.

City Manager Sonya Carter recommended that the city not apply for an individual grant as they may not receive it and they may only apply every three years.

Rezoned six properties along Hwy. 138/Jonesboro Road, east of I-85 from Light Industrial to General Commercial. The rezonings were initiated by the city to reflect the current usage of the properties. The properties adjoin Oakley Industrial Park and were originally classified as M-1 due to the proximity to the Industrial Park.

Numerous automobile dealerships and similar businesses, which are allowed in the M-1 classification, now occupy the properties.

However, the city determined that the GC classification better fits the current growth and voted to rezone.

Approved the final plat for Oakley Commons Phase 1 located on Oakley Road after Realty Enterprises LLC brought all concerns noted by the Planning Commission into compliance.

Commended Linda Norton for her efforts in raising over $7,000 in the Mayor's Golf Tournament to benefit senior services in the South Fulton area.
