It's her party, but you're all invited

It may be her party, but everyone is invited.

Lesley Gore, known for the hits "It's My Party," and "You Don't Own Me" will sing her vast array of hits to the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater Summer Concert Series this Friday and Saturday.

Gore got her start in the early 1960s when "It's My Party," produced by Quincy Jones became an almost instant number one hit. Jones then asked her to record another song and she agreed, as long as she could record a song she liked. No one remembers the song Jones chose but Gore chose "You Don't Own Me." Though it did not hit number one, as "It's My Party" did, it did reach number two. It has been suggested that if it wasn't up against two Beatles hits at the time it would have reached number one.

Gore continued to record songs in the 1960s and many of them charted in the Top 40. It was during this time that gore branched out and started composing her own songs, both music and lyrics. Her first published song was "Leave Me Alone" which was featured in the film, "The Girls on the Beach."

Though she was no longer in the pop music scene of the 1970s, which had gravitated to rock acts, Gore continued to write and record. She recorded two albums in the 1970s; "Someplace Else Now" and "Love Me By Name." Gore still received critical acclaim and still had fans. Some of her fans were other recording artists who wanted to record some of her songs. Dusty Springfield recorded "Love Me By Name."

Though Gore recorded less and less, she seemed to compose more and more. Her song "Out Here On My Own," which she recorded with her brother, Michael, appeared in the movie, "Fame" and was nominated for an Oscar. Gore then returned to the stage and appeared in both large and small venues. Still composing, Gore also ventured on to Broadway, appearing as a guest star in "Smokey Joe's Cafe." She is currently working on her own musical review, "I'll Cry If I Want To."

Lesley Gore will perform at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater. Paradise Radio will open the show and standing room tickets are $35 and will go on sale at the box office at 6 p.m.
