Wonder why there are no takers for this historical invitation to special party

It's truism in history that what goes around comes around. Therefore, it was no surprise to discover in the county archives the following letter to the editor published by a Fayette County newspaper in 1834.

It concerns an interesting, little-known, historical footnote about the activities of the descendants of the Tories, loyalists of the British Crown, who settled here after the Revolutionary War.

Would you kindly reprint this old letter in The Citizen.

Very truly yours,

I.M. Historicus

Sir Humphrey Tarleton, Commander

Fayette County Post 29

King George's Own Dragoons

Chartered 1777

29 April, 1834

My Fellow Loyalists,

Post 49 will be sponsoring its annual observance on Redcoat Memorial Day next Saturday on the historic grounds of Tomochichi's oak grove where the Dragoons captured and hanged the seven patriots in 1778.

Of course, bygones will be bygones, so all descendants of the patriots are also invited to join us for this celebration honoring the brave Loyalists who fought in the valiant, losing struggle to defend Georgia and keep our colony in the King's realm.

I truly don't understand the lack of participation in our organization by the patriot descendants in our country. There's absolutely no discrimination in the Fayette County Dragoons, and we badly need seven real descendants of the patriots for our annual reenactment of the hanging.

Very truly yours,

Sir Humphrey Tarleton
