County commission misleads us about air pollution severity It is alarming, and somewhat embarrassing, that our [Fayette] County Commission refuses to admit that Fayette County has an air pollution problem, even though state and federal agencies have confirmed that the problem exists and ranks the Atlanta region as one of the worst in the country. Any reasonable person in the county, especially those that suffer with a respiratory condition, would certainly agree with the agencies findings. By taking this "not us" position, our current commission has not only put the residents of the county at risk, but has also cost us millions of dollars in state and federal funding for road improvements. Making statements that we do not have an air pollution problem will only allow the problem to get worse, especially as we go into the summer months. Such misleading statements do not, and will not, make "the problem" go away. To rectify any problem, the first step is to recognize that there is a problem. What's next? Will our county commissioners want us to believe that we don't have a traffic problem? That would certainly sound good, but I don't believe that the traffic congestion we see everyday would get any better as a result. Truthfulness and trustworthiness should be the foremost guiding principles for any governmental body elected to represent the residents for which they serve. It's difficult to understand their motive, but such statements make it difficult to believe that our current commission has the best interests of Fayette County residents in mind. Mislead us once, shame on the county commission. Mislead us twice, shame on the residents of Fayette County. Roy R. Robertson Fayetteville Rick.Robertson@delta.com
