There are a number of activities taking place this weekend that will get you out of the house enjoying the weather and mingling in the community. Whether you like to peruse nature, art or other cultures, there is a local option taking place this weekend.

The 17th annual South Metro Rose Society Rose Show will take place at Hood Avenue Primary School in Fayetteville Saturday from 1-4 p.m. Local gardeners can enter the contest. Specimen rose entries will be accpeted between 8-10:30 a.m. Gardeners who would like to exhibit should contact Maxine Hunnicut at 770-719-1298.

The rose is the national flower and hundreds of varieties of hybrid teas, floribundas, gradifloras, polyanthas, old garden roses and miniature roses are grown in Georgia. At the show, specimen roses, sprays, collections and arrangements are judged on flower form, size, color and substance. The display is spectacular with hundreds of rses from every color category competing for ribbons and trophies. Queen of theShow is awarded to the most beautiful hybrid tea rose.

The Rose Show is also an educational opportunity. American Rose Society Rosarians will be available at the show to answer rose culture questions and to demonstrate fertilizing, pruning, and pest and disease control techniques. Door prizes will be awarded throughout the day and rose plants will be on sale. At the conclusion of the show, prize winning specimens will be on sale. Admission to the show is free.

Another free event taking place this weekend will be the annual Japanese American Friendship Society Festival at the Glenloch Recreation Center in Peachtree City. The festival usually takes place in the fall but the group, made up of employees from Japanese companies in the Peachtree City area such as Panasonic, TDK, Hoshizaki, Yamaha and so on, moved the festival to the spring.

There will be face painting and children's games, musical entertainment from a Taiko band, Japanese snacks like Okonomiyaki, dressing up in taditional Japanese summer wear called Yukata, door prizes and much more. The event will run from 12:30-4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Also taking place this weekend is the Old Courthouse Art Show and Taste of Fayette festival in downtown Fayetteville.

As you can see there is a lot going on this weekend, so get out there and enjoy yourself.
