Machete arrest makes county a national joke

An open letter to the Fayette County Board of Education and Superintendent DeCotis:

Can you hear the citizens of Fayette County laughing at you as you make fools of yourself? I sincerely hope the Gilman case makes 60 Minutes so the entire country can have a much needed laugh.

You wonder why the voters of Fayette County have consistently voted "no" in recent years when you have gone to the community with referendums asking for additional funds for the schools? Look no further than your ridiculous suspension and arrest of Fayette County High School student James Gilman for having a commonly used gardening tool (a machete) in his truck, along with other gardening tools, I might add.

Why on earth would we (now or in the future) vote to give additional hard-earned tax dollars to folks so obviously lacking in sound judgment and plain common sense?

I do not know young Mr. Gilman personally. But, like lots of Fayette citizens, I can't help thinking, "Wow, that could be my son or grandson." The fact that James' mom and dad are going to have to spend a small fortune on lawyers because of this outrage only adds to the insult.

Come to think of it, there is nothing laughable or funny about this sorry spectacle, just sadness that a fine young man trying to work at starting a part-time landscaping business could become the victim of such adult stupidity.

How long is it until the next election anyway?
