Annexation talks begin

Fairburn and Fayette County officials began the process this week of resolving an annexation issue.

Fairburn has petitioned Fayette to annex a nearly 10-acre tract on Milam Road. The site, according to Fairburn city clerk Nancy Faulkner, is owned by the Bedford School.

The school's property straddles the line between Fairburn and Fayette. Faulkner explained the school is looking at expanding, and wants to have all its property in the city.

"It's pretty straightforward," Faulkner said.

Last year, Fairburn officials met with resistance when a property owner requested to have Fayette County land annexed into the city.

Collier Gladin, executor of the estate of Nannie C. Gladin, had requested annexation into the city. Gladin's 42-acre tract is on Milam Road and 22 acres of the property overlaps into Fayette County.

If the request had been approved by both Fairburn and Fayette, the city would then be considered a Fayette municipality and would be required to participate in joint service delivery negotiations as part of House Bill 489, a state law requiring cooperation between counties and cities.

The Fayette County Commission did not allow the annexation to take place.

The County Commission was scheduled to start discussing the issue last night.
