Whitewater's 'sermon in silence' is this Sunday

Members of Christ's Church at Whitewater invite the community to worship with them this Sunday, May 5, as they emphasize the theme of "Shatter the Silence" in honor of Deaf Awareness Month. A majority of both worship services at 9:30 and 11 a.m. will be done in silence.

Willie Lamb, Deaf Ministry director, has been teaching a beginning sign language class since the first of the year. Many of her students and other deaf members will be participating in the service through the communion meditation, special music, and other areas of worship.

"Many of us could be surrounded by deaf people and not realize it because deafness doesn't show until we see them using the beautiful language of signs," Lamb said. She says she hopes to raise awareness of some of the burdens deaf people face on a daily basis.

"Deaf people live with discrimination, frustration, and misunderstanding. The biggest burden they face is hearing people who do not understand the facts of life in a silent or muffled world," Lamb added. "Sunday's service is dedicated to helping people better understand the facts of life in a silent and muffled world and to help people to reach out together to 'Shatter the Silence.'"

Christ's Church at Whitewater is on Ga. Hwy. 85 South, 4.5 miles south of the Fayette County Courthouse. For more information, call the church office, 770-461-1487.
