"Getting to Know Fulton County Government"

Fast Facts On... Fulton County Human Services

Fulton County's Human Services Department, led by Valarie Wilson, under the direction of deputy county manager Keith Chadwell, coordinates programs that help improve the quality of life for senior citizens, children and families, persons with disabilities, and the homeless.

The department consists of six divisions:

· The Office of Aging oversees the county's senior citizens program in compliance with the Older Americans Act. It also provides information and referrals, home-delivered meals, transportation, in-home services, adult day care, and daily therapeutic, enrichment services and congregate meals at 13 neighborhood senior centers and three senior multipurpose facilities.

·The Office of Children and Youth coordinates mentoring programs such as Youth Commission, Beat the Odds, Call to Manhood, Call to Womanhood, Leaders of Tomorrow, Students Technology Education Program by Seniors, and recognition programs such as Beat the Odds.

The office also administers annual FRESH grants to assist community-based youth activity programs.

·The Office of Disability Affairs monitors the county's compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. It also ensures accessibility in buildings and provides service referrals, alternative language formats for county communications, reasonable accommodations for employees, and disability awareness training.

·The Office of Workforce Development helps coordinate job training and placement and post-employment follow-up activities for citizens through One-Stop Comprehensive Career Centers, apprenticeship programs, direct referrals, evaluation and counseling, and support of the welfare-to-work initiative.

·Emergency and Transitional Housing helps operate Jefferson Place, the county's emergency shelter and transitional housing complex for homeless men. It also manages support services such as substance abuse counseling, medical care, social service referrals and job search assistance to return them to productive living.

·The Planning and Community Partnerships conducts departmental strategic planning, seeks support funding for programs and works with AID Atlanta to produce the Art for AIDS auction fundraiser for homeless persons who have AIDS. The department also administers human services grants to community-based agencies, and guides County volunteer efforts.
