Seniors month starts next week
Free seminars and health screenings, a salute to the oldest citizens, naming of the County Senior of the Year for 2002, and opening a new senior center will be among the highlights of Fulton County government's observance of Older Americans Month in May. The purpose is to illustrate the month's national theme, "America: A Community for All Ages," and the numerous therapeutic services designed to enrich the minds, bodies and spirits of the county's 130,000 seniors at 16 senior activity sites. Festivities kick off Wednesday, with a showcase of services from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Palmetto Neighborhood Senior Center, 510 Turner Avenue in Palmetto, and a tribute to persons age 100 and older. The county's Senior of the Year will be announced at a volunteer luncheon Wednesday, May 15, at the Dorothy C. Benson Senior Multipurpose Complex in Sandy Springs. Ribbon-cutting ceremonies will be held May 14 at 11 a.m. at the county's newest site, Southeast Neighborhood Senior Center, 1650 New Town Circle in Atlanta. Other Older Americans Month activities range from a senior care symposium in northwest Atlanta, to a technology and environmental health fair in East Point. Also scheduled are barbecues, fashion shows, a mini jazz concert, and a senior-oriented "chair ball" baseball game. For more information on activities near you, call the Fulton County Human Services Department's Office of Aging information line at 404-730-1600.
