Homelessness can apply to organizations too

There are 30 homeless organizations in Fayette County, all sharing a common goal, a home to call their own.

A special fund raising event was held last Thursday evening to draw attention to the plight of over 30 organizations devoted to the arts, ballet, and drama.

The play, "The Boys Next Door", was given to the 120 specially invited guests. It was held at the "Black Box Theatre" at McIntosh High School. Sponsored by the Fayette Players and Community Theatre, the play was a good example of the kinds of productions that can be produced with local talent.

The story, a play in two acts by Tom Griffin, is set in a mentally disabled complex and follows the story of the inhabitants trying to cope with everyday events.

"The actors rehearsed five days a week for six weeks," said Joan Velsmid, co-chair of the community theatre. "They spent twice the time as for other plays in rehearsal to be able to portray their part with feeling and respect due the subject matter."

The "Warehouse Playhouse" project, whose motto is "it's more than a stage", has acquired $125,000 towards the building of its own facility. It is hoped that it will be located between Fayetteville and Peachtree City. The architectural plans are drawn which includes a 475 seat theater and a 49 foot-long proscenium. A two story building will sit at its right, containing class rooms, dressing rooms, and storage area. The word "fly" is found on the drawings and refers to the two-story open area above the proscenium which will allow for plays such as "Peter Pan" to be presented or any play requiring the actor to fly up and down.

The goal for the project is $2 million and as soon as 20 to 30 percent of that goal is obtained, a loan for the balance can be obtained and construction can begin. It is expected that the short term goal can be reached by this Fall. Actual construction would take slightly under one year.

Fayette Players and Community Theatre is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization and welcome your contributions.
