McIntosh Softball Player Signs with UNCW

Four-year varsity softball player Meghan Mulcahy received a scholarship to play at Division I University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Mulcahy, a versatile player for the Lady Chiefs, has been an instrumental part of the team for the past four years. She was named MVP for 1999 and 2000 and was named to the AJC's All Southside second team. In 2001, Mulcahy was named the Best Offensive Player of the Year.

Mulcahy's main position is catcher, but she is strong at both corners and also pitches. She is also the first McIntosh softball player to receive a Division I scolarship to play fastpitch her freshman year.

"Meghan is what every coach looks for in a player," said Stacy Smith, head coach for the Lady Chiefs. "You can put Meghan anywhere on the field and she'll give 110 percent each time. She is a very smart ball payer she knows the game as well as anybody. UNCW will benefit from Meghan's expertise."

Mulcahy will attend UNCW to study forensic science.

"They have a good biology program and it's in a nice location," stated Mulcahy, who hopes to start for the team next year.

She has been a member of the Atlanta Viper Fastpitch Softball Club for the past four years. She was named to the 2002 GACA South All Star Fast Pitch Softball team. Her parents are Patsy and Tim Mulcahy of Peachtree City.
