Sandy Creek student named top entrepeneur, receives scholarship
Marquis Bohannon, a student at Sandy Creek High School, has won a $2,000 college scholarship in the Guardian Girls Going Places competition, a national college scholarship program sponsored by the Guardian Life Insurance Company of America, NY. Bohannon was selected from over 2,000 girls for her outstanding business accomplishments including the "Marquis Computer Graphics Company," which develops business cards, logos, and promotional materials for various organizations. Bohannon's other passions - fashion and art - are evident in her other business venture, the "Marquis/Marquel Art Camp," a nonprofit summer program that focuses on the development of young people in the subjects of art and fashion. Bohannon teaches the fundamentals of visualization and creativity through art. The camp is supported by donations from relatives and local businesses. "Each year we are incredibly impressed by the young women who enter the competition and by their wonderful ideas, businesses and financial proficiency," said Joyce Gordon, vice president, Individual Markets Sales Support Guardian, New York. "We are thrilled with this year's winners. Marquis is an extraordinary young woman who has taken steps toward financial independence. Along the way she has always shared her talents and time with others." The Girls Going Places college scholarship recognizes and rewards teen-aged girls who demonstrate exceptional entrepreneurship, are taking the first steps toward financial independence and have made a difference in their school or community. This scholarship program anchors Guardian's Women's Initiative, which was established to help Guardian capture opportunities in the women's marketplace by positioning Guardian as a company that promotes financial literacy, independence, and career choices for women. In this year's competition, 15 promising entrepreneurs were chosen for uncommon achievement in bringing their aspirations to life. The first, second and third place winners will receive scholarships for $17,000, $9,000 and $5,000 respectively. The remaining 12 finalists will each receive $2,000 scholarships.
