Actvities abound in area this weekend

As the weather gets nicer, the weekends tend to fill up with lots of fun events. There is something for everybody this weekend, whether they are lovers of animals, the theatre, fine art, or music.

Theatre lovers may want to head out to see "The Music Man" at the Fox theatre in Atlanta. The show focuses on con man Harold Hill who is out to swindle the town of River City. The pot thickens when Marian, the town librarian, finds out about Hill's plan. "The Music Man" runs through April 14 with shows at 8 p.m. through Saturday and matinees at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Ticket prices range from $23.50-$46. Phone 404-817-8700.

Another famous play being performed in the area is "Barefoot in the Park," which runs at the Newnan Community Theatre, Friday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m. April 12-27. The play, written by Neil Simon, focuses on a newlywed couple in their first apartment and the problems they encounter as they start out their married life. Those who appreciate fine art will want to visit the spring art show "Art in Bloom." The Fayette Society of Fine Arts (SOFA) in conjunction with the Endowment Committee of the Cultural Arts (ECCA) will present the show at the Old Fayetteville Train Depot from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Thirty three Fayette County artists will be exhibiting their original paintings and sculpture.

Original paintings and prints will be sold and proceeds will benefit the SOFA scholarship fund which awards scholarships to several deserving area high school students. Phone Silvia Feenaghty at 770-487-1005 or Susan Grundy at 770-631-3817 for more information.

For those with an ear for classical music, Spivey Hall will present Flautist Emmanuel Pahud on Saturday. Pahud will be joined by three strings players for an evening of quartets by Mozart and Rossini at Spivey Hall at 8:15 p.m. Tickets are $30.

On Sunday, Anonymous 4 and Lionheart, two of the most renowned and respected names in early choral music, join forces at Spivey Hall for a concert at 3 p.m. Tickets are $40. Phone 770-961-3683.

Also on Sunday, The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will perform Beethoven's Fifth Symphony at the Clayton County Schools Performing Arts Center at 3 p.m. Tickets are $20. Phone 404-733-5000.

Animal lovers can head to the annual Critter Craft Fair at Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Sharpsburg. The large indoor festival, sponsored by the Good Shepherd Humane Society, will run from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday and will feature craft vendors, silent auction, face painting, bake sale and pet portraits from your pet's photo. All proceeds will benefit the Good Shepherd Humane Society and will be used to help build a no-kill shelter.

The Warm Springs "Spring Fling" will have vendors, entertainment, food and fun on Saturday. The event is in remembrance of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Phone 1-800-FDR-1927.

The Fayette Samaritans will have a yard sale at the Fayetteville Gazebo from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday. Those wishing to donate small appliances, household items or furniture should call 770-719-2707. Items of clothing are not needed. Proceeds will benefit its programs for the needy of Fayette County.

As you can see, there is a lot to do in and around the metro Atlanta area this weekend and the events mentioned are just the tip of the iceberg.
