Wellman never was an official mayor candidate Fred Wellman's letter, in response to my letter, was conspicuous by what it did not address. He did not deny that his attacks on Mayor Brown were personal and not issue generated. That accusation must have been true. He did not deny being a hypocrite for criticizing Mayor Brown in print after ripping Dan Tennant for criticizing a PTC council member in print. Obviously true. I must apologize for saying that Mr. Wellman used 9-11 as an alibi for dropping out of the mayoral race. You see, he was never even in the race. He didn't file his candidate affidavit. He didn't pay his $400. He was never an official candidate. Apparently he was just testing the waters. And the "waters" must have gotten too hot because exactly two hours after Dan Lakly filed his affidavit on Sept. 28, Freddie announced he was "not running." Or was he running from something? Timing is everything. In the past I ridiculed him for not taking a stand on even one single issue during his "campaign." His strongest commitment was that he would talk to people if elected. How could I not call him Wishy Washy Wellman? And now I find out that he was so wishy-washy that he never even signed up to run. Talk about vindication. And don't we all wish we had a nickel for every time a Fred Wellman letter rambled through his military career. We would, as they say, all be rich. That may be hot stuff when all the guys are sitting around the barracks, but it is getting really old in The Citizen. Mr. Wellman, we have all memorized your Army exploits, so there is no need to publish them again. Please. I finished my military service over 30 years ago and now have the opportunity to serve my community on the Ethics Commission. I was asked to fill the position and am glad to do it. Fortunately the powers-to-be could not care less what Fred Wellman thinks. Fred Wellman is just a guy who said he was running for PTC mayor, but never actually did. Bill Webster Peachtree City
