While audiences are familiar with the story of John Forbes Nash, the mathematician at the center of the Oscar nominated film, "A Beautiful Mind," Atlanta audiences will soon become familiar with another brilliant and unstable mathematician, the one at the center of David Auburn's award winning "Proof," which will be presented at the Alliance Theatre through April 21.

"Proof" is the story of Catherine, an enigmatic woman who has faced the challenges of caring for her mathematician father. Catherine struggles with the affections of one of her father's former students and her sister's efforts to control her. She also must reconcile how much of her father's madness or genius she inherited. Catherine discovers a mysterious mathematical proof among her father's papers that makes her question love, trust and her family legacy.

"Proof" won the 2001 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award. It premiered at the Manhattan Theatre Club and moved to Broadway where it continues its run. It is being directed for the Alliance by Susan Booth. Booth is the artistic director for the Alliance. She has worked as the director of new play development at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago and was a frequent guest director at the Alliance before accepting a more permanent position.

The cast for "Proof" includes Susan Pourfar as Catherine, William Bogert as her father, Robert, Rhoda Griffis as Claire and Brik Berkes as Hal. Pourfar has appeared off-Broadway and off-off-Broadway in a number of shows, while Bogert has appeared on hundreds of television series including "The Greatest American Hero and "Small Wonder" as well as the films "Heaven Can Wait," "War Games," and "A Perfect Murder." Griffis has appeared in a number of shows at the Alliance as well as on the television programs, "Dawson's Creek," and "Matlock," while Berkes has worked with a number of local theater companies including the Horizon Theatre, Georgia Ensemble Theatre and the Alliance.

Tickets for "Proof" range from $18-$57 and may be purchased at the Woodruff Arts Center Box Office or by calling 404-733-5000. Tickets may also be ordered on the Web site, www.alliancetheatre.org.
