Wheat, Tyrone seem bent on dividing the county

The newspaper had a story stating that former Mayor Mike Wheat of Fayetteville was considering running for the Fayette County Commission. After reading the story, I have to admit to being a little surprised that Mike Wheat would say he is concerned about the breakdown in communications between the county commission and the city governments.

His way of fixing things is to stand up at a public meeting in front of [Tyrone] Council members and ask them to help him run against one of the commissioners (and he's not even sure which one)? Isn't that just a little divisive? And just a little self-servings? And possibly just a little rehearsed with certain folks in Tyrone who seem to have absolutely no intention of trying to mend fences?

Somehow it didn't surprise me that [Tyrone councilmen Ronnie] Cannon and [Paul] Letourneau quickly jumped on board, or that they would take time at a public meeting to further their own agenda rather than do the business of the people. Their idea of trying to be diplomats and work at improving the relationship between the city and commission to date has been to call a commissioner a liar and repeatedly trash the commission as a whole at public meetings and in the newspaper.

I have been watching and reading about the on-going differences between the city and county in its current phase (this is a battle that has been waged for many, many years without resolution, not just in our county, but in many others). Not once have I read or heard of any statement in recent history from the county commission that has not been gracious, factual or polite.

Mr. Wheat appears willing to hitch his campaign caboose to a very negative train for purely political reasons. If he is going to continue to try to accelerate and accentuate the differences between the cities and the counties as his central campaign issue, all he will do is further the divide.

And if the council in Tyrone truly wanted to be able to work with the county commission, maybe they should consider being a little less vocal with the negative rhetoric and at least act like they were trying to work out problems. They are making the county commission look good.
