Soccer teams get wins, prepare for tournaments

The local soccer teams got big wins earlier this week and any teams are enatering some solid tournaments this weekend.

Starr's Mill's boys and girls produced wins over Stockbrdge on Tuesday night. The Lady Panthers won 6-0 and got goals from Katey Price, Lindsay Anderson, Shelley Wegryzyn, Lucy Martin, Sarah Burke and Michelle Calle. The boys defeated the Stockbridge Tigers 2-1 in overtime. The Lady Panthers will host Evans tomorrow night at 5:30 p.m. and the boys will play Evans at 7:30 p.m.

Newnan's Lady Cougars improved to 7-2 on the season and recorded their fifth shutout of the year. Wynn Mottola had five goals and three assists, while Lanie Scott and Christie McDonald each had three goals. Newnan is hosting a tournament this weekend and Fayette County's boys and girls will be participating.

The Fayette County Lady Tigers faced Spalding on Tuesday night and won 4-2. Goal scorers for the Lady Tigers were Sarah Oxford, Kiera Morris, Britni Emerson and Lena Watford. The boys won their game against Lovejoy, 4-1. Adam Lester scored two goals and Benjamin Daniel scored one. The other goal was an own goal that bounced off of a Lovejoy defender. Fayette Coutny's boys and girls will face teams from Alabama and Georgia this weekend. The tournament started last night and wil run through the weekend at Whitlock Park in Newnan.

Sandy creek got back in the win column on Tuesday with wins over Westlake. The Lady Patriots won 12-0 and the boys tem won 8-0. Kevin Erickson and Steven Deveraux each scored two goals for the Patriots. Sandy Creek's next game will be next Wednesday as they host Rockdale County. The boys wil play at 6 p.m. and the girls will play at 8 p.m.

McIntosh's Lady Chiefs were off this week but will play in the Jekyll Island Showcase today and tomorrow and will host the adidas Challenge Cup next week. The boys faced Lassiter on Tuesday and won 2-1. The Chiefs will host Lovejoy tonight at 8 p.m. and then will cpompete in the McIntosh Classic - Ford Cup next week. They will face Chattanooga on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Oak Mountain, Ala. on Friday at 6 p.m and Bishop England, S.C. at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Spring has officially arrived and with it comes the exciting final weeks of the regular season of soccer.
