Award winning 'Rent' comes to rock the Fox

When "Rent" hit the stage in 1996, it took Broadway by storm.

The show, inspired by Puccini's "La Boheme," celebrates a community of artists in New York's East Village and their travels and travails over a period of one year.

"Rent" won the 1996 Tony Award for Best Musical as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Since 1996, it has been a mainstay on Broadway as well as around the world.

The Fox Theatre will present "Rent" through Sunday.

Mark, a filmmaker, lives with Roger, a song writer, in a loft that is about to be turned into a high-priced studio by their former friend, Tom Collins. Roger falls in love with Mimi, while Mark deals with his breakup with Maureen, a performance artist.

There are many other plot lines and characters in the show, which features a variety of musical numbers, such as the ballad "Light My Candle" and the opening song of the second act, "Seasons of Love."

The cast features a variety of actors. David Oliver Cohen, star of Nickelodeon's "Taina," stars as Mark, while Roger is played by Kevin Spencer of the band Mezzanine. Krystal L. Washington, a student from Ball State University in her first national tour, plays Mimi, and Sara Schatz, who has appeared Off-Broadway and in Europe, plays Maureen.

"Rent" is a show that can be touching one minute and hysterically funny the next. The show is very high-energy and vibrant.

"Rent" will be performed at 8 p.m. through Saturday and at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. There will be matinees Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets range in price from $22.50-$48 and are available at any Ticketmaster location, the Fox box office, by calling 404-817-8700 or by visiting www.broadwayacrossamerica.com.
