Award winning 'Rent' comes to rock the Fox By MICHAEL
BOYLAN When "Rent" hit the stage in 1996, it took Broadway by storm. The show, inspired by Puccini's "La Boheme," celebrates a community of artists in New York's East Village and their travels and travails over a period of one year. "Rent" won the 1996 Tony Award for Best Musical as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Since 1996, it has been a mainstay on Broadway as well as around the world. The Fox Theatre will present "Rent" through Sunday. Mark, a filmmaker, lives with Roger, a song writer, in a loft that is about to be turned into a high-priced studio by their former friend, Tom Collins. Roger falls in love with Mimi, while Mark deals with his breakup with Maureen, a performance artist. There are many other plot lines and characters in the show, which features a variety of musical numbers, such as the ballad "Light My Candle" and the opening song of the second act, "Seasons of Love." The cast features a variety of actors. David Oliver Cohen, star of Nickelodeon's "Taina," stars as Mark, while Roger is played by Kevin Spencer of the band Mezzanine. Krystal L. Washington, a student from Ball State University in her first national tour, plays Mimi, and Sara Schatz, who has appeared Off-Broadway and in Europe, plays Maureen. "Rent" is a show that can be touching one minute and hysterically funny the next. The show is very high-energy and vibrant. "Rent" will be performed at 8 p.m. through Saturday and at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. There will be matinees Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets range in price from $22.50-$48 and are available at any Ticketmaster location, the Fox box office, by calling 404-817-8700 or by visiting www.broadwayacrossamerica.com.
