Wednesday, March 13, 2002 Wieland receives public service award The Hearthstone Builder National Lifetime Public Service Award was given to John Wieland at a special presentation last month. A 10-minute video was aired to the audience in an attempt to recapture some of the outstanding moments of Wieland's charitable history. The award is the largest and most prestigious philanthropic prize in the housing industry and is presented each year to the builder who has demonstrated a lifetime commitment to public and charitable service. Wieland was honored for his longtime commitment to public service which included his work with Habitat for Humanity (building 24 Habitat homes), ongoing neighborhood revitalization in the inner city, and the establishment and contributions of Second Mile, the company member-funded giving arm of John Wieland Homes & Neighborhoods. In the words of Builder magazine and the Hearthstone committee, "John Wieland cares about the communities his company serves and has demonstrated the scope of his commitment throughout a lifetime of public service. His willingness to extend a helping hand and give back to the community has inspired countless others to join him in efforts to provide assistance for those in need, eliminate substandard housing, improve education, support programs to assist families and children at risk, and enrich community cultural offerings. Simply put, John Wieland cares." The selected Wieland for his outstanding dedication to public service and for his untiring willingness to help those in need. To honor Wieland's service to the people of Atlanta and surrounding communities, a donation of $250,000 is being made in his name by the Hearthstone Builder Lifetime Public Service Award to the John Wieland Fund at The Homebuilding Industry Foundation. Wieland announced that he will be personally adding $100,000 to the award money, which will be distributed to nonprofit organizations of his choice. In the company's 32-year history and more than 19,000 satisfied homeowners later, he has firmly established the company as the Southeast's leading builder of custom homes, with more than 900 full-time employees and thousands of trade partners.
