Spivey Hall presents internationally known artists By MICHAEL
BOYLAN Spivey Hall will showcase some world class talent this weekend. Friday, Soprano Sofie Van Otter will perform, Saturday will feature the Beaux Arts Trio and performing Sunday will be Chinese pianist Lang Lang. Van Otter will join longtime accompanist Brent Forsberg on the stage and will perform works by Franz Schubert, Cecil Chaminade and Kurt Weill as well as lesser known works by Nordic composers Algot Haquinius, Tor Aulin and Gosta Nystroem. Van Otter has been a member of the Basel Opera and has several current releases that are very varied in style. One disc is a recital disc of Beethoven, one is dedicated to the music of Cecil Chaminade and "For the Stars" is a collaboration with Elvis Costello. Van Otter will perform at 8:15 p.m. Friday evening. Tickets are $50. The Beaux Arts Trio, recognized for over 46 years as having set the standard for performance of piano trio literature, will perform Schumann's "Trio No. 1" and Beethoven's famed "Archduke" Trio. Pianist Menahem Pressler will be joined by Antonio Menses on cello and newcomer Daniel Hope on violin. They have performed all around the world and were chosen as Musical America's "Ensemble of the Year." Their landmark projects have included participation in the "December Evenings" festival in Moscow and a performance at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. The Beaux Arts Trio will perform at 8:15 p.m. and tickets are $35. Lang is only 19 years old but has won numerous awards at international competitions and worldwide praise. He began his piano studies at the age of 3 and entered the Central Music Conservatory in Beijing at the age of 9. Lang will perform works by Haydn, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Chopin and Liszt.
