Christ's Church at Whitewater to present Easter pageant March 15-17

The Fine Arts Ministry at Christ's Church at Whitewater will present the 7th annual performance of its Easter pageant, "We Beheld His Glory," Friday, March 15 and Saturday, March 16 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, March 17 at 9 and 11 a.m. The Saturday and Sunday performances are interpreted for the hearing impaired.

The musical drama features a cast of 100 church members in a vivid presentation of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

"The mission of the play is to introduce the love of Christ to those who do not know Him, to exalt the resurrected Christ to the watching world, and to draw those who know Him into a more intimate relationship with Him," a team spokesperson explains. "The program is narrated through the eyes of the apostle, John."

The part of Jesus Christ is played by Darren Phillips, director of the Small Groups Ministry at the church. This will be Phillips' fourth year in the role. Phillips says that playing the part of Jesus in his own church is both "humbling and thrilling." He adds that the most overwhelming thing about playing Jesus is "the brutal reality of the cross."

"Even though we are faking it, the harshness of the cross comes through," he said. "The cross leaves marks and it gives splinters, which I find for weeks after the play. Even though I am hanging from my arms against the ropes on the cross only slightly, I have often found my fingers numb for days after the program."

Phillips says that's not complaining. "It's just that the reality of the cross is no casual thing. Jesus didn't just come down off the cross and hug everybody, saying, 'Good job!.' He had to go through the grave and we thank the Lord for it!"

During the program, childcare will be available for children ages five and younger. During Sunday's performance, graded classes and worship will be available for children in fifth grade and younger.

Christ's Church at Whitewater is on Ga. Hwy. 85 South, 4.5 miles south of the Fayette County Courthouse. For more information or for reservations, call the church office, 770-461-1487.
