Month-long Generation Arts festival introduces kids to culture By MICHAEL
BOYLAN March is Generation Arts Month, a time when all of the arts organizations of metro Atlanta unite to expose children to cultural activities at a discounted price. This is the fourth year of the month-long festival and it continues to grow. Many activities take place in Atlanta but Offshoot Productions, based out of Peachtree City, and Newnan Community Theatre will both offer programs and productions during Generation Arts Month. Offshoot will present "Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz" at the Black Box Theater at McIntosh High School. The play recommended for ages 3-11 and is a participatory play, meaning that children will be able to interact with the characters on stage. Each child will receive one free ticket to the show for each full price ticket. Admission is $6. Phone 770-631-2362. Offshoot will also offer two workshops the following Sunday. Creative dramatics for ages 6-8 will introduce children to the "who," "what," and "where" of acting on stage through improvisation and theater games. The workshop will take place at the Peachtree City Library from 1:30-2:45 p.m. Developing characters through improvisation, for ages 9-13, will show young actors a variety of approaches to creating interesting and believable stage characters. The workshop will last from 3:15-4:45 p.m. Both workshops are free with a ticket stub from "Dorothy and The Wizard of Oz" or a $1 donation. Phone 770-631-2362. Newnan Community Theatre will offer a workshop on family in theater for ages 5 to adult. The workshop offers up a little bit of everything, allowing people to brush up on all sorts of theater and acting "know hows." One child is admitted free with each full price ticket, which is $5. Phone 770-683-6282. The Main Street Players of Griffin will offer a special deal for the March 1 and 2 performances of "Driving Miss Daisy." The show, which is about a woman and her chauffeur building a friendship and understanding, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. One youth will be admitted for free with each full price ticket. The full price is $15 and the cost for an additional youth is $10. Phone 770-229-9916. These activities are merely the tip of a very long and full iceberg. The Georgia Shakespeare Festival will offer several workshops and performances, as will the Center for Puppetry Arts. There will be painting workshops, concerts, operas, dance recitals, story-telling and more. Visit www.generationarts.org for a full schedule of activities or phone 770-772-5572 for the information line and schedule by fax-on-demand.
