Two boys basketball teams from Fayette County entered the state basketball tournaments last weekend. Sandy Creek advanced in the AAAA tournament, while Fayette County fell in the AAAAA tournament.

Sandy Creek faced Crisp County at Crisp County High School last Friday night. The Patriots won 86-83 in overtime. Coach Rick Francis watched his team struggle on defense for most of the game but saw a gutsy performance from his team in the overtime period to seal the win. The Patriots went five for five from the free throw line in overtime which ultimately was the difference in the game.

Sandy Creek had six players in double digits in Friday's game. Bill Crumpler led the team with 17 points while Richard Lott and Corey Adams each added 14 points. Aaron Honeycutt scored 13 points, William Belton added 12 points and Cornelius Brown contributed 11 points.

The Patriots will play the Butler Bulldogs from 3-AAAA in the Albany Civic Center on Friday at 5:30 p.m. If Sandy Creek wins, they will face the winner of the Kendick/Creekside match in the quarterfinals. Butler is a slashing, athletic team with some good perimeter shooters.

To get to the Albany Civic Center, take I-75 South to the I-475 South exit, Exit #177. Take the I-75 South /GA 401 exit and travel on I-75 South for approximately 50 miles. Take the GA-300/GA-FLA Parkway exit, Exit #99 and take a right on to GA 300 South. Travel on US-19 South to US 82/GA 520 exit. The Albany Civic Center is located at 100 West Oglethorpe Boulevard.

Fayette County's season came to an end on Saturday with a 72-63 loss to Lowndes. The Tigers found themselves trailing Lowndes, 23-16 at the end of the first quarter. They came back in the second quarter and only trailed Lowndes by two points. Fayette County stayed close and battled tough but things started to fall apart towards the end of the third quarter. Both Josh Burr and Jarrett Brown got into foul trouble and had to sit for some of the fourth quarter.

With less than two minutes to go, Fayette County had narrowed the score to 64-63 in favor of Lowndes, but soon watched them pull away and secure the win. Burr and Alfred Boykin each scored 17 points for the Tigers and Brown added 14 points.
