Sometimes happiness is only as far away as your own backyard.

That is the lesson that Dorothy Gail learns at the end of "The Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum.

Offshoot Productions will perform the classic tale of a girl traveling over the rainbow, making friends and finding her way back home with a slightly different spin. Offshoot's production of "Dorothy and The Wizard of Oz" is a participatory play for children, meaning the actors will interact with the children throughout the show. It is a way to introduce theater to young audiences and make the experience both fun and creative.

The show features several professional actors and apprentices. The actors include LeeAnna Lambert as Dorothy, Jason Vaughn as the Scarecrow and Alisha Winfrey as Glinda the Good Witch. Other performers are Richard Berry, Don Jenkins, Chelsea Cooper, Christine Drummond, Melissa Hamilton, Katy Jenkins and Rebecca Kling.

The show will be directed by Susan Steadman, Offshoot's artistic director. Steadman's daughter, Paige, has composed the mood music and sceneographer A. Bryant Betsill will control the technical aspects of the show.

Performances will be in McIntosh High School's Black Box Theater and are Fridays Feb. 22 and March 1 at 7:30 p.m.; Saturdays Feb. 23 and March 2 at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., and Sundays Feb. 24 and March 3 at 3 p.m.

Tickets, $5 in advance and $6 at the door, are available ahead of time at the Peachtree City Library, 770-631-2520; the Fayette County Library, 770-461-8841, and Omega Book Store, 100 N. Peachtree Parkway, Peachtree City, 770-487-3977. Groups with 15 or more members are eligible for discounted tickets, with purchase in advance.
