Panthers swimmers drop times at state meet

Starr's Mill competed in the 2002 GHSA Swimming Championships Feb. 14 and 16 at Westminster. Forty-nine 5-A schools throughout the state were represented.

Starr's Mill took 13 swimmers to the meet this year, which was their largest contingency at state to date. Three swimmers qualified in individual events, and four relay teams competed. Two individuals and one relay team made it to the finals which were held on Saturday.

Sophomore Brittany Stevens, who holds the Fayette County record in the 100-meter butterfly, placed seventh at the state finals with a time of 1:00.44. This beats her county record, which was 1:01.62.

Stevens also swam the 50 free, and was ninth going into the finals with a time of 25.88, but ended up placing 14th with 26.18.

Junior Kenny Jubb swam the 50 free in preliminaries, and placed 22nd with a time of 23.30. In addition Jubb swam the 100 free in prelims with a time of 50.78.

He didd better in the finals finsihing 13th with a time of 50.67. This is a personal best for Jubb. Sophomore Kyle Flora swam his personal best in the 100 breast in prelims, placing 35th with a time of 1:08.62.

All four Panther relays that swam improved their times, with the boys 400 free relay making it to the finals. On the girls team, Laurel Surratt, Samantha Hudson, Krista Ulrich, and Stevens swam the 200 medley relay in prelims placing 30th with a time of 2:06.69.

The girls 200 free relay team of Brittney Wester, Libby Hardison, Hudson and Stevens placed 25th in prelims with their best time of 1:51.11. Jessica Lovelace was the alternate on the girls team.

The boys 200 free relay team of Ricardo Ramos, Haynes Finney, Jubb and Flora placed 19th in prelims with a time of 1:36.05. This was a drop of almost five seconds from their old time. The boys 400 free relay team of Josh Strickland, Noah Copeland, Jubb and Flora swam 3:35.53 in the prelims. They moved up to 15th place in the finals with a time 3:34.63. This was a big improvement, as their entering time was 3.43.57.

Coach J.B. Campbell hopes to qualify even more swimmers next year, as the team seems to get stronger each season.
