Flat Rock Middle honors its business partners There are numerous businesses throughout Fayette that show their support every day for the county's schools by donating their time and resources through the Partners in Education program. In order to show appreciation for those partners who work with Flat Rock Middle School, the school sets aside a day each quarter to host a special luncheon. Flat Rock recently showcased the musical talents of some of its students and updated its business partners on projects at the school during its second appreciation luncheon of the year. One of the largest projects that will not only benefit Flat Rock, but its surrounding schools as well as the entire North Fayette area is the building of a community auditorium called Patriot Hall. Various performing groups, both from the schools and throughout the community would use the hall. Parent Teacher Organizations at Flat Rock, Burch Elementary, Sandy Creek High and Tyrone Elementary are working together to help spearhead fund-raising efforts. Student government President Andrew Smola reported that the organization is currently selling carnations and hopes to raise $500. The student government also plans to host a hat day and a pie day to collect additional funds, according to Smola. Media specialist Diane Evans gave those in attendance an opportunity to take a look at the new media garden and reading café that is being built just outside the media center. School partners Bob Adams Homes, Andy's Nursery, Fayette Kiwanis and Boy Scout Troop 72 have helped build and landscape the garden, which will have a stage, picnic tables and park benches. PTO President Patty Newland said the main focus of the luncheon was to let students, staff and school administrators show their appreciation for the partners' support. "These luncheons are important because partners need to see the benefits of their time and talent in action," Newland said. "They also need to be made aware of what the school is doing and where the school needs help, but most importantly they need to see how everybody benefits from what they give." Fayette County Board of Education administrators also voiced their appreciation for the business partners. Superintendent John DeCotis, assistant Superintendent of Operations Fred Oliver, youth apprenticeship coordinator Patrick Sennett and school board member Janet Smola were among those who spoke. "We appreciate your willingness to share of your time and experience to enrich our schools. You are to be congratulated for your continued support of our efforts," Sennett told the partners. Flat Rock has approximately 27 businesses and organizations that have partnered with the school for the 2001-2002 academic year. |
