Season ends for some local teams in region tournament By MICHAEL

The high school baslketball playoffs have begun. If you win two games, you head to the state tournament. Lose and you go home. Many of your local teams are ready to start the spring athletic season but several teams are still alive, as of the time of publication. McIntosh and Starr's Mill's boys and girls lost their opening games, while Fayette County and Sandy Creek's boys and East Coweta's girls advanced and Fayette County's girls Sandy Creek's girls and East Coweta's boys lost. McIntosh's boys fell to Riverdale, 60-48. The Chiefs had a 31-27 lead at the half but fell victim to a 15-0 Riverdale run at the beginning of the third quarter. McIntosh's girls lost to Eagle's Landing, 59-55 in overtime. Starr's Mill's boys trailed Morrow, 33-30 at the half and fought valiantly down the stretch. With just over a minute and a half remaining, the Panthers only trailed the Mustangs by two points, 70-68. Morrow kicked it up a notch, scored the next 10 points and won 80-68. Gary Kubik was Starrr's Mill's leading scorer with 21 points. The Lady Panthers faced North Clayton on Monday and lost 54-53. Fayette County's boys won their first game of the region tournament, defeating Newnan, 78-59. Josh Burr was the leading scorer for the Tigers with 33 points. The Lady Tigers faced Jonesboro on Monday and lost 78-56. East Coweta's girls defeated Mt. Zion, Jonesboro, 67-52 on Monday, while the boys lost to Stockbridge, 58-50 on Tuesday. Sandy Creek's boys buried Union Grove, 67-37 on Tuesday, while the Lady Patriots lost to Woodward Academy, 46-33 on Wednesday. William Belton was the leading scorerfor the boys with 16 points, while Corey Adams added 11 points. The boys will face Creekside at 5:30 p.m. today at Sandy Creek High School. They are already guaranteed a place in the state tournament next week. It is the second consecutive year the Patriots have made the state tournament.
