Fayetteville now has an extra $100,000 for an important road project.

The City Council Thursday night approved a contract allowing the Georgia Department of Transportation to contribute the additional funds for Church Street improvements already underway. The state found some extra money that couldn't be used for another project, according to city engineer Don Easterbrook.

The contribution is significant in light of the fact that it boosts the state's overall share of the project to $258,700 and the entire project cost is set at $420,000.

The council upheld the denial of a special exception request that would have allowed the development of a Mr. Transmission location at 705 Lanier Avenue West.

The denial, initially given by the city's Planning and Zoning Commission, was upheld despite major changes in the overall development plans since the commission's ruling. City planning director Jahnee Prince told council that, according to the city attorney, the council would need to either act upon the plans originally submitted or send the new plans back to P&Z.

The applicant requested that the new plans, which included some additional commercial and office buildings, be sent back, but several council members expressed their reluctance to grant a special exception for that site and the motion to deny passed unanimously.

Council approved the 2002 Local Assistance Road Program, as well as a bid award for a criminal justice consultant to study possible plans for a new city law enforcement facility.

A rezoning request by Timothy Breyne for his property at 180 South Jeff Davis Drive, from C-1 with conditions to C-1, was approved.
