Local wrestlers compete in area meets

The area wrestling tournaments took place over the weeknd and local wrestlers fared well.

Starr's Mill placed second in the area 4-AAAAA tournament to Eagle's Landing. The Panthers scored 235.5 points to the Eagle's 254 points. Starr's Mill had four area champions and will send 13 wrestlers to the AAAAA state tournament in Perry.

Fayette County and East Coweta are among several other teams that will also send wrestlers to the state tournament this weekend.

The area champions for the Panthers were Tyler Kourajian, 103; Michael Cosper, 112; Scott Hartpence, 135; and Daniel Fuhrman, 189.

The Landmark Christian School wrestling team secured a place at next weekend's state tournament by beating Heard County and Bremen at Bremen on Friday night. As one of the top two teams, Landmark was able to progress to the state team championship to be held on Feb. 16. As per the new state dual championships, the guys competed for the team championship on Friday and their individual championships on Saturday.

Saturday, the War Eagles were successful in winning the Area II championship for the second time in the school's history. The top four wrestlers from each weight class are scheduled to progress to the state tournament at Adairsville this weekend.

All fourteen of the LCS team members individually qualified for the next level with a total of 227 points while defeating Bremen, Brookstone, Heard County, Temple, Bowden and Pacelli.

Seven of the Landmark team members were champions in their classes for a new school record. They included: Daniel Cox, Blaine Gable, Paul Muchnick, Jeremy Smith, Wren Gibby, Ethan Everett and Eddie Solly. Kyle Flavin, Jeremy Brown, Ben King and Chris Capps all finished second in their classes. Nick Taussig and John Houston placed third and Chris Rogers placed fourth.

These athletes, coached by Fred Gilkeson and Chris Greer, have great momentum going into the next two weekends of dual championship tournaments.
