Starr's Mill collects second county championship The Starr's Mill swim team held on to their county championship title by defeating the three other high schools at Kedron Aquatic Center last Friday. The combined total points for the Panthers were 366, McIntosh 323, Fayette County 165 and Sandy Creek 135. The girls teams from Starr's Mill and McIntosh were neck and neck throughout the night. The Panther boys had many impressive swims. Noah Copeland finished in first place in the 200 free, 2:00.56 and first in the 500 free, 5:24.25 and Kyle Flora finished first in the 200 IM, 2:15.74 and first in the 100 breast, 1:09.89. Other good swims were from Kenny Jubb, first, 50 free, 23.67 and first in 100 free, 51.95; Haynes Finney, first, 100 back, 1:06.78 and second in 100 fly, 1:04.01; Paul Daniel, second, 100 back, 1:13.94; Ricardo Ramos, third, 50 free, 24.63 and third in the 100 free, 55.81; Chris Frederick, third, 100 breast, 1:14.26 and Wesley Paxton, third, 500 free, 6:28.17. The Starr's Mill girls team also swam well. Brittany Stevens set a new county record in the 100 butterfly that was set by McIntosh last year. The new record time is 1:01.62. Stevens was also first in the 50 free with a time of 26.56. Other medal winners for the girls were Samantha Hudson, first, 200 free, 2:24.05 and second in the 100 free, 1:03.41; Brittney Wester, third, 50 free, 29.65; Laurel Surratt, third, 100 free, 1:03.53; Kim Wetter, third 500 free, 6:56.68 and Krista Ulrich, third, 100 back, 1:16.12. The Panther boys relays placed first in each of their events. Jubb, Finney, Flora and Ramos swam the 200 yard medley in 1:52.29. The relay team of Flora, Ramos, Brandon Watkins and Jubb swam the 200 free relay in 1:38.53, which is a state qualifying time. Finney, Paxton, Daniel and Copeland swam the 400 yard freestyle relay in 3:57.33, and Kris Pretzer, Josh Jiricek, Anthony Paxton and Brandon Watkins won a third place medal with a time of 4:10.81. The Panther girls relay teams placed second in each of their events, and also won a third place medal in the 200 free relay. Ulrich, Surratt, Stevens and Jessica Lovelace swam the 200 medley relay in 2:09.58. The 200 free relay team of Hudson, Wester, Libby Hardison and Stevens had a time of 1:55.15, and the third place team of Amanda Petersson, Lorraine Norris, Ann Thrasher and Surratt swam it in 2:03.83. The 400 free relay team of Hardison, Ulrich, Lovelace and Hudson had a time of 4:27.12. The Starr's Mill Panthers will be taking three individual swimmers and four relay teams to the state meet at Westminster on Feb. 14-16. McIntosh will send 12 swimmers going to the state meet. "We had excellent swims out of Asami Mase, Lindsey Lochridge, Junko Mase, Sarah Harmon and Tiffany Grant for the girls," said Coach Polly Kichefski. "The boys got excellent swims out of Chris Koperniak, Chris Lee, Jeb Beard, and Phil Hesser." The girls team won all 3 relays, Asami Mase and Lochridge finished first and third in the 200 IM and in the 100 breast lochridge and Junko Mase finished first and second. Hilary White won the girls 100 backstroke and Asami Mase won the 100 freestyle. They boys came in second in the 200 medley relay and also the 200 freestyle relay. George Clark took second in the 200 freestyle and also the 500 freestyle. Koperniak and Beard finished second and third in the 200 IM.
