Aikin, Caldwell honored by St. Gabriel's

The women's guild and youth ministry at the Catholic Church of St. Gabriel in Fayetteville recently selected Inez Aikin as Woman of the Year and Keith Caldwell as Teen of the Year. Both will represent St. Gabriel's at a special recognition Mass to be celebrated by Archbishop John Donoghue at Atlanta's Cathedral of Christ the King this month. St. Gabriel's Life Teen Band, Gabriel's Voice, was selected to provide music for the special Mass.

The awards are selected each year as part of the Atlanta Archdiocese Conference of Catholic Women.

Aikin and her husband, Bob, have been members of the parish for seven years. She is active in many volunteer positions at the church and is a weekly volunteer at Fayette Community Hospital in the surgical services department. She also is a member of the Friends and Neighbors Club of Fayette County.

The Aikins formerly lived in Peachtree City and San Diego, Calif., but now are retired and live in Fayetteville. They have been married 48 years, have two grown sons and three grandchildren.

Teen honors recipient Caldwell is the son of Theresa and Bob Caldwell of Fayetteville. He has been a member of St. Gabriel's since its founding in 1978 and is currently an active acolyte, reader, usher and worship leader as well as a drummer in several music ministries. He was a founding member of the Columbian Squires, the youth program for the Knights of Columbus organization for adult Catholic men. During his sophomore year, Caldwell was chosen to attend the Christian Leadership Institute and attended several summer youth retreats.

Caldwell is a senior at Fayette County High school where he has been a member of the band, the football team, and the Select Chorus. His music interest led him to participate in a chorus workshop at Spivey Hall in December and he was selected for Honor Chorus and performed in the sixth district choral competition hosted by the Georgia Music Educators Association. This spring, he will travel with the Select Chorus on its European tour to Germany, Austria and Hungary.

Caldwell also is active in scouting and has progressed through the ranks from Tiger Cub to Eagle Scout, the highest rank in scouting.
