Eighth annual Garden and Patio Show a haven for green thumbs

As winter begins to fade into spring, seemingly faster every day, thoughts of green thumbs everywhere turn to gardening.

For every question a gardener may have about soil, grass or flowers, there are plenty of answers and options. The eighth annual Garden and Patio Show, taking place this weekend at the Cobb Galleria Centre, will be able to provide those answers with seminars, exhibits and demonstrations.

The Garden and Patio Show has grown since last year, adding 35,000 square feet to the floor and including 30 fully landscaped gardens. Paths Across Georgia, a group helping to create bike baths throughout the state, has created a landscaped trail through the show floor and showcasing bicycles of all imaginations.

The path also will take visitors to the Groundskeeper's Market, where a number of gardening products will be on sale; the Backyard Bandstand which will feature live music throughout the run of the show, and to the Master Gardener's Gazebo, where Master Gardeners will offer individuals tips on getting the most from their gardens.

There will be a number of special guests on hand at the Garden and Patio Show, including Joe Washington, host of HGTV's "Groundbreakers," Jim Wilson of PBS' "The Victory Garden," columnist Kathy Henderson, Martha Tate and local gardening celebrity Walter Reeves.

Washington will host "Joe's All Star Yard Solutions" and "Landscape Jeopardy," where visitors can win prizes with their knowledge.

Reeves will do a live broadcast Saturday morning and will give away free coffee and donuts and free admission to the show to visitors arriving before 9 a.m.

All of the guests will be conducting seminars throughout the weekend.

Another local guest at the show will be Master Gardener Judy Kubitz, who teaches free gardening classes at Home Depot in Fayetteville throughout the year. Kubitz will be on the Horticulture stage Thursday from 3-4 p.m. and Friday from 6-7 p.m.

The eighth annual Home and Garden Show will be presented at the Cobb Galleria Centre, Thursday-Sunday, Jan. 31-Feb. 3, noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, noon to 9 Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors, $3 for children 6-12 and free for children under 6. Phone 770-798-1997 or visit www.gardenandpatio.com.
