Is this 'new tone of civility'?

The following are not my words but I want to repeat them because I couldn't agree with them more, and after reading Fred Wellman's letter to the editor last week, now is a good time to repeat them.

"I am bothered when people write letters or complain but don't offer any plausible solutions to the problems... The constant name calling and accusations ... are reaching ridiculous levels ... It is time for ideas and solutions, not name-calling and finger-pointing ... let's take the lead of President Bush ... and create a more civil tone and start arguing the issues instead of the personalities." Fred Wellman, letter to The Citizen, May 2, 2001.

"[My primary goal is] to bring a new tone of civility and respect to the political arena in Peachtree City." "Wellman plans campaign," June 8, 2001.

"...it is time for a positive and respectful tone in the political arena in Peachtree City." Fred Wellman, July 4, 2001.

The change in tone in Wellman's letters baffles me. He sounded so promising until he quit his campaign for mayor. I was even more stunned when I saw his and our recently unseated council woman's behavior at the Jan. 10 moratorium meeting. They sat side by side and actually heckled when Mayor Brown spoke.

We are a community full of smart, respectful, courteous people and I was stunned at this conduct. It is not what I expected from a former mayoral candidate and a former council woman.

Let's get back on track. The election is over. Mayor Brown won by a landslide and he brings leadership, civility, respect and honor to our city.
