The Fayette County Chamber of Commerce announced its Business Person of the Year at its 35th annual banquet.

Long-time citizen Steve Black was named the 21st business person selected for this honor. In 1981 he served as chairman of the chamber and also has served as a county commissioner.

Last year's recipient, Dot Kite, State Farm Insurance, made the announcement.

"Steve has served as a past president of the Flint River Council of the Boy Scouts and is keenly aware of the needs of the entire community. Under his leadership his company is one of the county's largest contributors to United Way."

Black is a graduate of North Carolina State University, and began his business career with the Georgia Power Company. In 1979 he came to Fayette County, becoming vice president of Peachtree City Development Corp., now Pathway Communities.

In 1991 he was named president and was later promoted to president and CEO.

He is responsible for most of the industrial, commercial and office development in Peachtree City and played a key role in bringing in companies and projects like TDK, Panasonic, Cooper Lighting, World Airways, the Braelinn Village shopping center and The Avenue.

He has spearheaded land sales in excess of $50 million and helped create an untold number of jobs in the county.

This has expanded and diversified the tax base to the benefit of all Fayette countians, according to the chamber.

"Doesn't every community in American," said Kite, "wish they had such an outstanding business leader?"
