The honeymoon is over in FCT's 'Barefoot in the Park'

In Neil Simon's "Barefoot in the Park" Paul Bratter and Corie Banks recently got married.

They spent six days at the Plaza Hotel in New York City and now they are moving into their first apartment, a tiny space on 48th Street. It suddenly becomes very clear to the young couple that the honeymoon is over.

The apartment is six floors up and has a hole in the skylight, backwards plumbing, a leaky closet, a broken oven and a bedroom that can barely fit the bed. The Bratters also have an eclectic mix of neighbors, including Victor Velasco, an eccentric 58-year-old who gets into his apartment through their bedroom and eats strange food.

The newlyweds also have to deal with Corie's mother, Ethel, who pops in unexpectedly and is a tad overbearing. Ethel is a single woman who has an ulcer and dresses very blandly. She must sleep on an ironing board because of problems with her back and her idea of a good time is a Toni home permanent and settling in to watch "The Late, Late Show."

But the main problem for Paul and Corie to adjust to is married life itself. Corie is an adventurous free spirit and Paul is a rising young attorney. Their expectations of the marriage vary and, when they realize this, sparks fly.

"Barefoot in the Park" stars Melissa Babbie as Corie, Brad Boseman as Paul, Eileen Baldwin as Ethel, Keith Williams as Victor and Mike Boylan as Harry Pepper. Boylan also is the director.

"Barefoot in the Park" will be performed at McIntosh High School's Black Box Theatre Jan. 24, 25, 26 and 31 and Feb. 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9. Tickets Thursdays are $8. Friday and Saturday tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and children under 12. Seating is limited. Tickets can be ordered by phone at 770-631-8568 or purchased at the door.
