Hug those unsung heroes who care for your souls

In light of the events from Sept. 11, 2001, we have so many "new-found heroes." These are men and women who have always been heroes; we just never realized how much.

On Saturday, Dec. 15, I sent an e-mail to Father David Epps to thank him for marrying my husband and myself our 7-year anniversary was on Dec. 17. I sent it to him to thank him for baptizing the two children that my husband and I have. I sent it to him to thank him for being there when my daughter was born.

I sent Father David Epps my e-mail to thank him for all he had contributed to my husband Sean's and my life. He pretty much did everything spiritual in our lives other than delivering our kids.

Anyway, Father David received the e-mail before church on Sunday, and do you know what he did? He did not take credit for a single thing. He announced to the church that Sean and I were about to celebrate seven years of marriage. He announced that our son Tristan was the first to be baptized at Christ the King. Father David announced a lot for Sean and me, but never gave credit to himself.

In my eyes, there are other heroes that we don't often think of as such, the leaders and elders in our churches.

Father David Epps, Sean and I want to thank you for marrying us seven years ago. We want to thank you for baptizing our two children. We want to thank you for being there at the hospital at 3:30 in the morning on a Sunday to anoint our daughter, just a few hours before you have to give a sermon, and then a few hours after that watch the Falcons play off for the Super Bowl. We thank you and Cindy for all that you have done for us. You are a hero in our eyes.

Every one that reads this, give your church elder pastor, priest, rector, cannon, reverend, bishop, whatever a special hug today. They are "undercover" heroes.
