Critics don't have decency to allow Brown a honeymoon

Well, Steve Brown has been mayor of Peachtree City for only a few weeks, yet his detractors won't give him the decency of allowing him a "honeymoon period" to establish his agenda and priorities.

In particular, Fred Wellman is acting as a spokesperson for the "bidness as usual" crowd, positioning himself as if he were some sort of one-man government-in-exile.

Mr. Wellman, of course, has a history of exhibiting a near-pathological hatred for anything Steve Brown proposes.

One suspects that if Mayor Brown were to issue a proclamation that "the sky was blue," the following week would see a stinging vitriolic response from Mr. Wellman in the Atlanta newspapers claiming that the sky was actually gray or black most of the time, and that Mayor Brown was unfair to colorblind citizens of Peachtree City by showing favoritism to a single color.

Mr. Wellman would do well to remember that Mayor Brown was elected by a substantial majority of the Peachtree City voters. Mr. Wellman had an opportunity to run for mayor himself last year, and he declined. Perhaps Mr. Wellman will be able to recover some intestinal fortitude in time to oppose Mayor Brown in the next election.

In the meantime, I'd urge Mr. Wellman to cool his rhetoric and give Mayor Brown an opportunity to do his job.
