PTC needs neighbor governments to help plan Congratulations go to all Peachtree City dreamers who worked on the Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) project! The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) recently awarded Peachtree City with a $600,000 grant for our LCI work for the Ga. Highway 54 West and hwys. 54-74 intersection area. The grant will go towards the gateway bridge feature in the Highway 54 West corridor. It is part of a broader plan designed to provide seamless golf cart and GEM transport to all quadrants of our city and the new commercial districts. If you will remember, we originally brought in a high-end planning firm. Not being satisfied with the outcome, we threw their plan out and rolled up our sleeves to do our own plan in our own way. The planners at the ARC were very impressed. The plan we composed is a testament to the incredible source of human capital that we have available in our community. Our LCI plan will be the foundation of the hwys. 54 and 74 Overlay Zones. The overlay zones will provide more quality development with improved architectural standards and a continuous "street-scape" that will give the developers more marketability and allow us to maintain the character of our community. Currently, we have some of the brightest minds in Peachtree City working on funding mechanisms provided by the Georgia General Assembly to assist us in providing the necessary improvements to the overlay areas. The landowners and developers in those areas have been most cooperative and are active participants on the committees. My goal is for the developers and merchants to achieve the highest dollar possible for their developments while maintaining the character and charm of our community. The Avenues project is a good example. In the broader view, I would like Peachtree City to explore working with surrounding jurisdictions with land planning issues on our borders. We need to discuss how we can provide continuity in planning and create a winning solution for all. With that purpose in mind, I am asking that representatives from all Fayette County jurisdictions, Coweta County, Senoia, the ARC and the Georgia Department of Transportation assist us in developing these new standards. Subregional cooperation is going to determine our future. We have some very gifted people in all jurisdictions and, working together, we can create a living environment that will be the envy of the rest of metro Atlanta. Let's keep moving forward in a positive fashion. Steve Brown Mayor, Peachtree City sbrown@peachtree-city.org
