Spivey Hall sets up a classic beginning to 2002 concert season

Spivey Hall, the concert hall on the campus of Clayton College and State University, has locked up a number of solid acts on the classical music and choral scene for the first part of 2002.

Not only will world renowned artists be taking the stage at Spivey Hall, but students and faculty members will also get to showcase their talents on a number of occasions.

The 2002 season starts with the CCSU Alumni Recital Jan. 18. The show, which will be an all-British program, will feature soprano Wendy Baker, pianist Holly Chatham, bass Mitch Gindlesperger, mezzo-soprano Tami Petty and tenor David Schnell performing "Britten" and "In a Persian Garden." The show will start at 8:15 p.m. and admission is free.

The following evening's performance of the CCSU string quartet also will begin at 8:15 p.m. and will be free. The group will perform works by Prokofiev and Mendelssohn.

CCSU's organist in residence, Richard Morris, will perform at 8:15 p.m. Jan. 26. Admission to the concert, which will also feature brass, winds and piano, will be $25. The Georgia Chamber Players with Misha Dichter on piano will perform at 3 p.m. Jan. 27 for a fee of $25. Saxophonist Todd Oxford will perform a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 31.

February begins with a visit from the Morehouse Glee Club Feb. 1 at 8:15 p.m. Tickets are $15. The following evening will feature the Brazilian Guitar Quartet at 8:15 p.m. Tickets will be $30. Sunday, Feb. 3, guitarist Manuel Barrueco and Michala Petri, who will play the recorder, will perform at 3 p.m. Tickets, which will include works by Bach and Handel, are $40. The Albert McNeil Jubilee Singers, a 13-member group founded over 29 years ago, will perform Feb. 8 at 8:15 p.m. Tickets will be $25. Countetenor David Daniels, BBC Music's Male Singer of the Year for 2000, will perform Feb. 9 at 8:15 p.m. Tickets for his concert are $35.

Dr. Shaun Amos will direct two one-act operas, one by Gustav Holst and one by Ralph Vaughn Williams, Feb. 15 and 16. Tickets are $10 and the show begins at 8:15 p.m. The opera continues Sunday with the Southeast Regional Finals of the Metropolitan Opera Auditions at 2 p.m. Admission is $10. Organist Robert Plimpton will perform Feb. 22 at 8:15 p.m. with tickets priced at $25. The Atlanta Singers will perform Feb. 23 at 3 p.m. for $15. The Spoleto Festival USA Chamber Music will perform works by Dvorak, Debussy and Brahms at 3 p.m. Feb. 24. Tickets will be $30.

March begins with an exciting group, the Turtle Island String Quartet. The group combines elements of bluegrass, salsa, hip hop, rock and swing and will perform at 8:15 p.m. March 1 and tickets will be $25.

Organist Diane Meredith Belcher will perform the following evening at 8:15 p.m for $25. The Georgia Chamber Players will perform Sunday, March 3 at 3 p.m. They will be joined by violinists William Preucil and Gwen Starker. Tickets are $25.

Mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter will perform at 8:15 p.m. March 8. Tickets will be $35 or $50. The Beaux Arts Trio will perform the works of Beethoven and Schumann at 8:15 p.m. March 9 for $35. Nineteen-year-old Chinese pianist Lang Lang will perform at 3 p.m. March 10. Tickets will be $25. CCSU faculty composer Mary Lynn Badarak will present her new works March 12 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.

The Shorter College Chorale will come to Spivey Hall March 16 for an 8:15 p.m. performance. Tickets will be $15. St. Patrick's day, Celtic fiddler Liz Carroll will perform a 3 p.m. concert for $25. Pianist Angela Hewitt will perform at 8:15 p.m. Her concert, which will feature the works of Bach, Beethoven and Ravel, will be $35. ASO Concertmaster Cecylia Arzewski and ASO Music Director Robert Spano will perform on the violin and piano respectively March 24. Admission to their concert will be $30.
