Though the students were still on holiday break, the athletic teams were back in action over the weekend. Friday saw Fayette County and Starr's Mill meet on the court, while Sandy Creek played at Union Grove and Our Lady of Mercy faced Northgate.

The Fayette County girls defeated Starr's Mill, 45-36. The Lady Panthers had a two point edge at the half but the Lady Tiger's defense was stifling. They stole the ball 15 times on Friday night and took a nine point lead into the fourth quarter. Bonnie Bynum was Fayette County's leading scorer with 10 points.

The Starr's Mill boys started off the new year with a win, defeating the Tigers, 69-47. The Panthers grabbed the lead early in the second quarter and never let go. They were assisted by a dazzling three point shooting, especially from Gary Kubik who hit three three pointers. Aubrey Kidd and Che Brewer each scored 16 points and Kubik added 15 points. Last night Fayette County hosted McIntosh, while Starr's Mill hosted Forest Park. Fayette County will play at Eagle's Landing on Friday, while Starr's Mill will play at Mt. Zion, Jonesboro.

The Bobcat and Lady Bobcats did not fare well against Northgate. The boys lost 57-27, while the girls lost to the Lady Vikings, 45-36. Our Lady of Mercy lost their previous matches to Northgate on Dec. 8. Our Lady of Mercy's boys played Callaway on Saturday and lost 80-51. The Bobcats hosted Manchester last night and will host Spalding County on Friday. On Saturday, Our Lady of Mercy will travel to take on Pike County.

Sandy Creek faced Union Grove on Friday and both the boys and girls won. The boys, currently ranked fourth in AAAA, won 81-36 and the girls won 54-51. On Saturday, both teams lost to Westlake. The girls fell 39-34 to the number one ranked team in AAAA. Jessica DeMooney netted 14 points for the Lady patriots, while Tracy Paschal pulled in nine rebounds. The boys were defeated 75-68. Richard Lott led the team in scoring with 21 points. Sandy Creek hosted Jones County last night and will host Creekside on Friday.

McIntosh's boys and girls basketball teams took on East Coweta on Saturday. The boys won 61-52, improving their overall record to 6-2, while the girls lost 65-43. East Coweta's boys established an early lead but McIntosh took over and went into the half up by four. In the third quarter the Indians recaptured the lead only to fall behind once more. McIntosh dominated in the fourth quarter, using the fast break to stay ahead of the Indians. Dexter Manley led the team in scoring with 23 points, while Drew Hartley added 15 and Scott Prah contributed eight points. McIntosh played at Fayette County last night.
