Lenox can't blame traffic mess on tree-huggers

I read [Peachtree City] Mayor Bob Lenox's parting remarks with great interest last week. Particularly noteworthy was his assertion that the congestion at the Ga. highways 74-54 intersection was the fault of the Sierra Club and other environmental groups. Mr. Lenox has obviously learned the art of blaming his opponents for his own failures from the master, former President Bill Clinton.

Mr. Lenox's claims are, to say the least, disingenuous. Mr. Lenox presided over an administration which approved numerous developments in that area. The gridlock at that intersection will only worsen with the addition of Home Depot and Wal-Mart. In spite of the strenuous objections of area residents and with full knowledge that highway improvement funding for Hwy. 54 west of Hwy. 74 would not be forthcoming anytime soon, Mr. Lenox ultimately supported all of these projects. He and the rest of our elected officials bear the responsibility for the consequences Leadership 101.

Mr. Lenox and others will parrot the pro-development mantra of this county anytime voices from the community object to the rampant sprawl overrunning Fayette. To wit: the developers will sue the city or county if the leadership blocks their proposal, the law will not allow us to stop them, etc., etc.

Well, Mr. Lenox, the rule of law also obtains for those whom you would blame for your mistakes. The environmental lobby argued, correctly, that Georgia was in violation of the Clean Air Act; further, the state had not shown sufficient evidence it was attempting to comply with the provisions of said act. Therefore, DOT suspended highway funding for our state.

You can't pin this one on the tree-huggers, Mr. Lenox. You should have told your developer friends to wait until you could get the roads built.
