Seals set Georgia and Dixie Zone records

Six members of the Southside Seals swim team competed in the first St. Nicholas Inviational Short Course Meters masters swim meet in Marietta recently. The meet attracted almost 200 swimmers from 34 teams throughout the Dixie Zone and as far away as Illinois, Michiganm and Texas. Seals swimmers had some great swims and wins on their way to a top ten team finish.

In the women's 35-39 age group, Maurine grantham stroked to three top individual finishes in her first meet. She took second place in the 50 meter backstroke, sixth in the 100 meter freestyle and seventh in the 50 meter freestyle.

In the women's 40-44 age group, the "Three Musketeers" of Karol Welling, Lorraine Broome and Karen Uzpurvis dominated. Welling finished first in the 200 meter butterfly, while adding second place finishes in the 100 meter butterfly, the 200 meter breaststroke and the 800 meter freestyle. She also had six other top five finishes. Broome finished second in the 100 meter freestyle, third in the 50 meter butterfly and 100 meter individual medley and fourth in the 50 meter freestyle. Uzpurvis won the high point award for the age group with first place finishes in the 200 meter breast stroke, 100 meter butterfly and 400 meter individual medley. She also had three third place finishes and three fourth place finishes.

Steve Justice finished in first place in the 50 meter butterfly and second in the 50 meter backstroke in the men's 40-44 age group. In the men's 45-49 age group, Rob Copeland had first place finishes and new Georgia records in the 400 and 1,500 meter freestyles and the 200 meter butterfly. He also finished in second place in the 200 meter freestyle and the 200 meter backstroke.

The Seals also won five relays, two in record setting times. Grantham, Welling, Uzpurvis and Broome combined to win the women's 160-400 meter relay and 200 medley relay. Uzpurvis, Broome, Copeland and Justice won the Mixed 160-200 meter freestyle relay and 400 meter medley relay. Justice led off the 400 medley relay with a new Georgia record in the 100 meter backstroke with the rest of the team combining for a new Georgia and Dixie Zone record. The same four Seals got another Georgia and Dixie Zone record in the 800 meter freestyle relay.
