'South Pacific' to enchant Atlanta audiences

James Michener wrote "Tales of the South Pacific" to tell a number of stories from World War II.

The novel won the Pulitzer Prize. The stories focused on officers, nurses, soldiers and natives. Some were funny while others were sad and touching, so it made perfect sense to bring the stories to life, first as a musical and then as a film.

The Fox Theatre will present "South Pacific" Jan. 1-6.

"South Pacific" won nine Tony Awards and the current production stars Michael Nouri as Emile de Becque and Erin Dilly as Nellie Forbush. Nouri most recently starred in "*61" as Joe DiMaggio, while Dilly starred as Young Phyllis in "Follies" on Broadway. Other stars are Armelia McQueen as Bloody Mary; David Warshofsky as Luther Billis; Lewis Cleale at Lt. Joe Cable and Kisha Howard as Liat.

"South Pacific" features a number of classic songs such as "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Dames." The scenery and costumes are beautiful and the choreography is exciting. Scott Farris is the director of the show. Farris directed several productions of "Chicago" in Europe. His choreographer was Gary Chryst, who also did the choreography for this production.

Performances of "South Pacific" will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. There will also be matinee performances at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tickets range in price from $24.50-$47. Tickets are available at the Fox Theatre box office, all Ticketmaster outlets, and online at www.broadwayacrossamerica.com.
