Support United Way

United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta funds 435 programs and all of metro Atlanta benefits. But only a fraction of metro Atlanta African-Americans give at the leadership level ($1,000 and above) to this organization that helps so many.

Atlanta is noted nationally as the "city of choice" for African-Americans. We have a special opportunity to do something extraordinary for our community. We can, single-handedly, help make metro Atlanta better for everybody by making up the $1 million shortfall in the 2001 United Way campaign. The African-American community can take the 2001 United Way campaign to goal by December 30, 2001 with just a little extra effort. We are asking African-Americans in metro Atlanta to "Walk the Talk."

You can do this in a number of ways. Your church, fraternity, sorority or other organization can make a leadership gift to United Way of $1,000 or more or at any amount you can comfortably raise. You can write a check for a leadership gift or whatever you can afford. And, finally, you can speak to your friends and associates about the need and get them to follow your lead. There are matching funds for African-Americans who give $1,000 or more.

Here are three easy ways to "Walk the Talk": 1) Give online at www.unitedwayatlanta.org; 2) Call 211 to make your gift there, or 3) Mail contributions to United Way Homefront Effort, 100 Edgewood Avenue, Atlanta, GA 30303.

Our community depends on United Way programs to meet basic needs. We now have 39,000 job cuts in Georgia with 60,000 expected by year-end. United Way's 2-1-1 information and referral service is experiencing almost 300 more people calling per day for help. And preliminary estimates are that over 8,000 additional households will seek emergency financial assistance as a result of the economic impact of Sept. 11.

Your United Way leadership gift or any gift will help fund critical programs for a safer and stronger community. Some may say, "I already gave to my favorite organization." We are asking, you, however, to give to your community, too. You live, work and play here. Without affordable childcare and after-school programs for youth; homeownership programs to turn renters into homeowners; micro enterprise programs to help more people start their own businesses; or employment training programs that prepare people for the workforce, our community will be too far from being the best that it could be. This is why we volunteer our time with an organization that impacts hundreds of thousands of lives throughout our community.

To find out more about the matching incentives how your gift can generate more money to serve more call the African American Initiative at 404-527-7234.

Thank you metropolitan Atlanta African-American community.
